webinar „Pregnancy and epilepsy”

 Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the live webinar, Epilepsy and Pregnancy, sponsored by Sanofi and which will be on September 29th, 2020 from 9:30 to 11:30 CEST.

Women with epilepsy have a number of unique concerns during pregnancy. Pregnancy can exacerbate seizure frequency and both maternal epilepsy and in utero exposure to antiepileptic drugs can increase the risk of adverse outcomes in children born to women with epilepsy.

The careful management of epilepsy in pregnant women is therefore crucial to maintain a balance between controlling seizures and reducing those risks. Managing pregnant women and women of childbearing potential suffering from epilepsy is therefore challenging and complex and may require reconsidering the treatment options in a case by case approach.

A rational approach requires knowledge of such risks as well as an understanding of the effects of pregnancy on seizure control and of potential side effects of antiepileptic drugs.

During this interactive discussion session, the esteemed faculty will share practice-based consensus guidelines they developed with experts from six European countries (France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Turkey, and the UK). Experts will discuss the criteria that should be taken into account when managing women of child-bearing potential suffering from epilepsy and focus on the potential risks to the mother and child as well as the importance of engaging the conversation and planning a pregnancy well in advance to mitigate those risks.

Furthermore, treatment options before, during and post-pregnancy will be explored with a special focus on the switch and/or discontinuation measures to describe the most appropriate use of anti-epileptic drugs in these patients. Lastly, we will explore ways to encourage and support patient engagement in pregnancy planning. Planned pregnancies are usually best for women with epilepsy. This gives time to work with neurologists and obstetricians head of time.

Using strategies to lessen risks will promote a good outcome for mother and baby.

I am privileged to be joined in this webinar by an esteemed faculty panel of Professor Carreno and Professor Gürses. We will be happy to answer your questions via the online platform following the presentation.

Please note that further information on how to register will follow over the coming weeks. In the meantime, please be sure to save the date if you wish to participate in what promises to be an engaging exchange of expertise.

I look forward to you joining us in September!

Sincerely, Professor Joanna Jedrzejczak
